Although it changes a little each year, the Higbee family is a group of passionate, dedicated people of all ages. We are from all different walks of life, but we all have a love of Halloween, gore, and all things creepy! Brought together by a passion for scaring, our volunteers work hard perfecting their areas, their costumes, and their characters. Sliding is a new extreme sport created in the Haunt industry. Originating at California’s own Knott’s Berry Farm, sliding began as haunt scarers experimented with new, shocking ways to terrify their guests. Sliders use knee pads, metal-covered gloves and shoes to slide across the ground right at the feet of the guests – with jumps and screams always following.

As a new sport, sliding is still growing and developing. This means that sliders can’t buy the gear they need- so instead they make it. Each slider is responsible for finding the necessary parts (metal pieces, thick gloves, knee pads and steel-toe shoes, etc) and creating their own sliding gloves, shoes, and costume. Each slider’s gear is as unique as they are.

Every Heathen in the Legion has trained first as a scarer, as one of Higbee’s Heathens, to learn the mechanics of a good scare, how to read a crowd, and how to strike their target effectively yet safely. Once a veteran scarer is ready to begin sliding, they start by preparing their sliding gear.

Slider gear includes three key parts: gloves, kneepads, and shoes. Slider shoes can be any comfortable pear of shoes with large steel toe metals glued and taped on the outside of the toe. This allows the sliders feet to slide along the ground easily and can be used to make all sorts of sparks and loud noises.

To create their gloves the slider takes a sturdy pair thick gloves and glues on all sorts of metal pieces to cover the finger tips and palm. These gloves are critical for sliding, protecting the sliders hands while they maneuver at speed across concrete.

And finally, all kinds of sport knee pads can work for sliding, as long as there is proper padding and protection for the knees, and they are often duct taped on to the legs each night to assure they stay in place.

Our veteran scare actors work hard all year to practice and perfect their skill. During haunt season, the Legion meets for sliding practice twice a week. Learning how to maneuver safely through a crowd while speeding on all fours is the first lesson for all sliders. Eventually fun jumps and advanced skills can be learned- and sliders often love to show off their tricks and treats in spirited demonstrations.

Higbee Productions is proud to be home of the Heathen Legion- Modesto’s first sliding group! Inspired by the sliders from Knott’s, Higbee Productions decided to bring the sport north and create this sliding troupe to both learn and teach this addicting sport.

The Heathen Legion is featured at Boomers! Halloween Horror and Higbee Horror Haunt events throughout the year. See our event dates to catch us in person.
